The Equality of Sexlessness

The Equality of Sexlessness
G. K. Chesterton

In almost all the modern opinions of women it is curious to observe how many lies have to be assumed before a case can be made. A young lady flies from England to Australia; another wins an air race; a Duchess creates a speed record in reaching India; others win motoring trophies; and now the King’s prize for marksmanship has gone to a woman. All of which is very interesting and possibly praiseworthy as means of spending one’s leisure time; and if it were left to that, even if no more were added than the perfectly plain fact that such feats could not have been achieved by their mothers and grandmothers, we would be content to doff our hats to the ladies with all courtesy and respect which courage, endurance and ability have always rightly demanded.

But it is not left to that; and considerably more is added. It is suggested, for example, that the tasks were beyond the mothers and grandmothers, nor for the very obvious reason that they had no motorcars and airplanes in which to amuse their leisure hours, but because women were then enslaved by the convention of natural inferiority to man. Those days, we are told, “in which women were held incapable of positive social achievements are gone forever.” It does not seem to have occurred to this critic that the very fact of being a mother or grandmother indicates a certain positive social achievement; the achievement of which, indeed, probably left little leisure for travelling airily about the hemispheres. The same critic goes on to state, with all the solemn emphasis of profound thought, that “the important thing is not that women are the same as men — that is a fallacy — but that they are just as valuable to society as men. Equality of citizenship means that there are twice as many heads to solve present-day problems as there were to solve the problems of the past. And two heads are better than one.” And the dreadful proof of the modern collapse of all that was meant by man and wife and the family council, is that this sort of imbecility can be taken seriously.

The London Times, in a studied leading article, points out that the first emancipators of women (whoever they were) had no idea what lay in store for future generations. “Could they have foreseen it they might have disarmed much opposition by pointing to the possibilities, not only of freedom, but of equality and fraternity also.”

And we ask, what does it all mean? What in the name of all that is graceful and dignified does fraternity with women mean? What nonsense, or worse, is indicated by the freedom and equality of the sexes?

We mean something quite definite when we speak of a man being a little free with the ladies. What definite freedom is meant when the freedom of women is proposed? If it merely means the right to free opinions, the right to vote independently of fathers and husbands, what possible connection does it have with the freedom to fly to Australia or score bulls-eyes at Bisley? If it means, as we fear it does, freedom from responsibility of managing a home and a family, an equal right with men in business and social careers, at the expense of home and family, then such progress we can only call progressive deterioration.

And for men too, there is, according to a famous authoress, a hope of freedom. Men are beginning to revolt, we are told, against the old tribal custom of desiring fatherhood. The male is casting off the shackles of being a creator and a man. When all are sexless there will be equality. There will be no women and no men. There will be but a fraternity, free and equal. The only consoling thought is that it will endure but for one generation.

–From GK’s Weekly, July 26, 1930

All I can add to this is that Chesterton was profoundly capable of something few writers ever have been: seeing things as they are and then, while writing on the insight, being both relevant to his time and prophetic of the future.

So You Support Same-Sex Marriage…

Just a short post for now.

I’ve been watching a number of Facebook contacts change their profile picture or status to demonstrate their solidarity with the same-sex marriage movement, a movement which supports a concept that did not exist in human history until a few years ago (even in same-sex communities). The reasons for this are myriad, but that isn’t what I’d like to focus on at the moment.

Instead, I’ve noticed that all of these posts/statuses/images are emotional and aggressive in nature, as if the people posting them are being brave and courageous against an enemy. It is what I would expect to see if a country were at war with another. This is incredible, because these same folks claim to be tolerant; in fact, many claim to hold a monopoly on tolerance. This contradiction is something many in the movement are oblivious to, but think about it for a moment: Who are these people fighting? Why are they fighting them so aggressively?

If you ask them, they’ll tell you: Religious bigots. Apparently, everyone has been a religious bigot until today (because up until today, no one has asked for same-sex marriage). And apparently, there are no good arguments against same-sex marriage (or in favor of traditional marriage) sacred or secular. If there were, it would be a debate, not a war or a crusade.

But it has all the makings and trappings of a war.

Battle For the Sexes

In the clean and shiny home of The Future™, men and women will be interchangeable creatures. There will be machines to do the cleaning, the sewing, the cooking, and the teaching so that all the adults can make it as high as they’d like up the corporate ladder. Parents 1 through N will spend time with each other and any of their mechanically grown designer children. All references to differences between men and women will have long since passed from the minds of the enlightened citizens of this utopia, and all we be quite the wiser for it. Best of all, the Christian Church, that archaic organization that almost fell into antiquated oblivion, will be alive once more, carrying on the Gospel that gender-neutral Jesus once offered a primitive and barbaric people: For God so loved the world that thoughts about Him inspired a prophet who would defeat the only evil the world had ever known, the false notion of differences between men and women, that whosoever should believe this truth shall not perish but shall always be happy”. And all will rejoice night and day in this genderless and entirely modern world with no gender-based pronouns or segregated bathrooms. People born as men can bear children and people born as women can be super-tuff front-line soldiers (Just kidding! There won’t be war once masculinity is banished from the hu[she]man race!). Doesn’t this all sound lovely?

If you are a man with a single ounce of masculinity or a woman who has even once smiled at the idea of being feminine, the world you’d have for the children of your children would probably not look much like The Future™ that is being given serious thought by academics, postmodern religious folks, and politicians alike. You might even see The Future™ as a terrible place where cause-and-effect has been replaced with a predetermined outcome that is often, for lack of a more accurate word, stupid.

I read not too long ago a great piece by one of my absolute favorite bloggers about the topic that got me thinking.

And then, I stumbled upon something that at first I mistook for parody on another website. As it turns out, the author was rather serious in equating genders and sexes with “systemic injustice”. As he stumbled throughout his post from one affirming leftist quotation to another, he attempted to argue that even Christianity opposes genders. This is a most curious conclusion. The Bible, more than any other book, is obsessed from start to finish with sex and the differences between men and women. From the very beginning of creation and before Adam sinned, there were two, one man and one woman, and the latter was the helpmate of the former. Before human civilization and the first children could be indoctrinated by GI Joe and Barbi, men and women knew who they were, and God said it was Very Good. Jesus Himself chose twelve men to be His disciples and His closest followers. Paul spends multiple chapters in multiple hand-written letters on the topic of sexes.

We can take a book like the Bible and call it outdated, but that would make us rather miserable followers of the message in it. We could call portions of it obsolete, but that would make us pretty powerful arbiters that we are not responsible enough to be. We can attempt to find ways to reread what is obvious in English and even more obvious in context, but that turns us into liars. It seems to me the only proper way to read the Bible is to read it as it is with the intent of conforming our minds instead of the other way round.

The problem may lie further upstream in the minds that come to similar conclusions with the silly person I encountered earlier. Among his various sources was a book called Finally Feminist, from which this gem of postmodern wisdom could be gleaned:

“Why would God call entirely equal sexes to deeply different roles? Why would one role be that of leadership and the other of submission if women and men are equal not only in status and dignity before God but in every other way as well?”

Men and women are simply not equal in “every other way as well”. Not in our biology, which is plain. Not in our minds, which requires some knowledge but not so very much that a person capable of writing should miss it. Not in our Theology, where mankind is linked with sexual difference more strongly than difference from age. No, it must be in our wills and our wills alone that men and women could ever be equal in every way. If the will is opposed by Natural Law, Intellect, and Divine Revelation, the only place left for it to take refuge is in emotion and feeling, and this is precisely where it finds itself. The entire notion of The Future™ is an emotional one. There is nothing particularly logical about arguing in favor of a world without sexual difference, but it certainly makes someone feel better that sees difference and inequality as evil. This is only because The Future™ has not yet been realized. When and if anything like it comes about, it will become clear that inequality can be created by equating two naturally different things in a far more profound way than creating distinctions, and that it is all the more likely to result in evil.

Sometimes Compromise is Dishonest

Take abortion- one of the most debated topics in 21st century America. On the liberal/progressive side, the position is that abortion is an issue of a woman’s right to her own body. Surely no conservative or traditionalist would oppose that a woman could get a haircut, and yet they oppose abortion. On the conservative/traditionalist side, the position is that abortion is the murder of an innocent human being and is typically done for matters of convenience or expediency. Surely no liberal or progressive would oppose the punishment of murderers, especially for killing innocents.

The problem on many issues is that there is no middle ground. To compromise for one side is to be “half evil” (granted not both sides believe evil actually exists).

For gun control, one side believes more restrictions will prevent violent crime and other other thinks more restrictions will do nothing at best and at worst will create violent crime. Incidentally, “Assault Weapons” were banned for over a decade, and there was no change in violent crimes committed with them as they are rarely used in crimes, and yet the debate still rages around them for some reason.

For welfare, one side believes it creates unhealthy dependency and the other side believes it prevents unhealthy destitution. For redistribution of wealth, one side believes it is socially just, while the other believes it is morally unjust. For racial quotas, one side believes they make the world fair and the other side believes they make the natural into the artificial to mask reality.

In all of those cases, to take a “compromise” is to betray yourself. In those cases, it would be dishonest to compromise.

While compromise in some situations can be a good approach, one must first determine if compromise is a valid position. So often, we don’t take the time to do that.

Neckties are Sexist

If the feminist movement changed anything, it was the rate at which people would be offended by otherwise innocuous things. From FoxNews:

A group in charge of promoting Florida’s economic development released a new logo on Thursday, and it is causing a gender debate.
Enterprise Florida has unveiled its new logo: the word “FLORIDA” written in green letters, with the “I” represented as orange necktie. The tag line reads, “The Perfect Climate For Business.”
But some women business leaders said the logo is sexist, saying that most women don’t wear neckties.

“I thought immediately that it set us back, all the work that we’ve done. It’s not that they have to make it pink or ‘girlie,’ but maybe put a briefcase or something like an iPhone or smartphone in there to represent business,” said Pamela Rogan, the President of the Central Florida Chapter of NAWBO, the National Association of Women Business Owners. “There are a lot of other icons I think can better represent business.”

Rogan, and other women who have posted their comments online after the new logo was unveiled on Thursday, said if the idea is to attract new business to the state, it may not attract some female CEOs, MyFoxOrlando.com reports.

“When you’re going to a strange place, and you think that’s the stigma that’s there, you may think twice,” she said.

Enterprise Florida Public Relations Manager Sean Helton says the group has no intention of changing the logo.

“We feel confident in the brand, as a clear and effective message to both businesses in the state and worldwide, that Florida is a top destination for business,” he told MyFoxOrlando.com.
Helton added that the company interviewed 25 female executives before the logo launched, and none of them had any complaints about it.

Things to notice:

  • Most women don’t wear neckties, so neckties are sexist. Keep in mind that no one is stopping a woman from wearing one except fashion sense.
  • There is no “National Association of Men Business Owners”, but this is not sexist.
  • Having a necktie on a logo sets back the feminist movement enough that it takes away “all the work [a feminist organization] has done”.
  • People don’t notice sexism unless someone who is actively looking for it finds it (25 females didn’t find the sexism when tasked with doing that very thing, but one feminist who was not invited to do so did anyway).
  • iPhones, Smarthphones, and Briefcases can all apparently replace the letter “I” in “FLORIDA” as well a necktie.
  • A necktie in a logo for a company warrants a news story and press release.

This whole story, of course, will be made meaningless by the imminent defeat of sexism in regard to neckties. Soon, feminism will wipe away any memory of the connection between neckties and masculinity, and then the logo will be feminism-approved, to the delight of moderns everywhere. Now that’s progress.
