The Intolerant Tolerance Police

The best measure of the moral decline of a nation may just be how quickly shock and surprise become cliche. From FoxNews:

“Duck Dynasty” dad Phil Robertson responded to his critics, who have been slamming the A&E star for very graphic statements he made about his preference for heterosexual sex over homosexual sex.

Good to know, considering he is married to a woman. Poor word choice aside, two decades ago, this would not have been a controversial statement. But today, it is. Robertson seems to have a good handle on the way things have been moving since he was young:

“Everything is blurred on what’s right and what’s wrong… Sin becomes fine,” he said. “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.”

Is this false? Sexual sins of all kinds have gone from taboo to a badge of honor. Robertson, however, seems to realize that some things don’t change:

I don't think these folks care about whiny, emotional tirades.

I don’t think these folks care about whiny, emotional tirades.

Paraphrasing Corinthians he added: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

But lo, the Tolerance Police are come! And as always, they are mad as hell:

“Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phil’s lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe,” said GLAAD rep Wilson Cruz. “He clearly knows nothing about gay people or the majority of Louisianans – and Americans – who support legal recognition for loving and committed gay and lesbian couples. Phil’s decision to push vile and extreme stereotypes is a stain on A&E and his sponsors who now need to reexamine their ties to someone with such public disdain for LGBT people and families.”

“Vile” and “extreme” stereotypes. You catch that? Fifty years ago, everyone must have been inundated in violent and extreme stereotypes. Those savages! Mr. Cruz seems to lack some basic education in regards to Christian Theology. However, he also completely misquotes Phil Robertson himself. Disdain for LGBT people and their familes? Robertson will have none of that:

“My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.”

The thought police can’t have this. They won’t stand for it. You can only disagree with what the thought police disagree with, and you have no choice but to agree with what they agree with. You certainly can’t be of the mind that someone else is committing a moral crime (unless, of course, the thought police think so too). Doing anything else makes you intolerant, regardless of your commitment to abstain from disrespecting people. Mr. Cruz doesn’t understand the irony, it seems, as the only one calling for the silencing of his opposition; the only one accusing his opposition of lying, is himself.

Right now, all that people like Cruz have is empty threats, accusations, and a propensity to hate their opposition. It isn’t going to produce anything tangible at the moment, but give these people time. You probably can’t imagine a life of suing people who disagree with you in order to silence them and remove their livelihood. You probably have no inclination to spend your lifetime ruining someone’s life for respectfully disagreeing. If only Cruz and those like him were of the same mind.

There are people for whom the title “thought police” is a badge of honor. They exist to spread Right Think, to condemn their opposition not as wrong, but as evil and devoid of all human worth. They divide the world up into identifiable groups (rich white men) and then hurl every weapon they have in the general direction of those that stand in their way. They are bullies. Instead of disagreeing, they go to war. When a group doesn’t serve their ends (the elderly, the unborn, children, those with disabilities), they find new and imaginative ways to dehumanize them.

For now, we can either shake our heads or laugh at people like Wilson Cruz. Give enough time, however, he’ll get what he wants – to ruin Phil Robertson and his family or at least to have the show cancelled. These people are tireless.

Just remember that the one thing they hate the most, the one thing they cannot stand more than anything else in the world, is to be laughed at for the blowhards that they are. An ideologue can stand hatred, but he will breakdown to mirth. He may revel in debate and argument, in violent opposition. Stop taking him seriously, however, and he’ll quickly be out of his mind.
